The
Marpole Curling Club - Our Current Venue
8730
Heather Street at South West Marine Drive
in Vancouver
Until
the Spring of 2001, the events produced by Beautiful
House Gallery Lounge were rarely in the same venue more
than once or twice due to availability, seating capacity,
performance and lounging suitability, cost, technical
and sound considerations, and a myriad of other factors.
Overall,
we've had a lot of great feedback on our 2 warehouse
venues in Marpole where we held Copa,
Resolve
and Wildcard;
Marpole Place where we held Victor/Victoria
and Paris
Match; and Starry Dynamo where we held Angel
and The
Four Loves. We are still open to the idea of
returning to one or more of these venues in the future
for Beautiful House or a collaboration with other events,
cd release parties, etc.
Ironically,
some of our most well attended events have been Curl
2 in Marpole during the 4 month transit strike
and Resolve
and Wildcard,
both in different warehouses in Marpole. Our two events
at Starry Dynamo on Main Street were also quite well
attended and gave us and Starry Dynamo a unique opportunity
to work together for a common goal. Since our two events
during Starry Dynamo's first few months of operation,
they have gone on to forging a new concept of non-licensed
music and literary and art events which we are glad
to see. We have also gone on to a somewhat permanent
venue in the kitschy upstairs lounge of the Marpole
Curling Club.
As
with all relationships, it takes time for both parties
to see whether or not there are mutual benefits and
take things one event at a time. After our three-part
series of Curl events at the Marpole Curling Club, we
are happy to announce that we willl hold our next and
14th event, Joy,
in the same venue on Saturday, November 24th, 2001.
There
are many warehouses, cafes, community centres, legions,
elks lodges and other clubs all over Vancouver - some
have become well known as regular entertainment venues
including the Anza Club while others are yet undiscovered
spaces for the independent arts scene. As the city grows
and a new generation of local entertainment comes of
age, we are seeing a number of other grassroots initiatives
forming in emerging neighbourhoods like Main Street
and established neighbourhoods like Commercial Drive
and Gastown. See our
recommendations here.

The
Marpole Curling Club does not operate between July and
September and is an excellent venue for groups of 50-300
people. Situated centrally near the major intersections
that lead to the Vancouver International Airport, the
Marpole Curling Club is no more than 20 minutes from
downtown Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, and New Westminster.
