Two Hip 'Cats' in the Lounge Create A Very Fine House in Marpole
By Anne Middler

Two Vancouver entrepreneurs tired of the pretentious club scene, and of having nothing to do and nowhere to go in their neighbourhood, have taken matters into their own hands.

James Neufeld and Shainin Hudda, both 31, started Beautiful House Gallery Lounge to promote local artists, musicians, and performers, and foster a sense of community in the Marpole neighbourhood.

"We thought it would be great to have a lounge place to hang out and have and music and friends come together and meet new people," Hudda said.

Neufeld, owner of Magnetude Media, and Hudda, a fashion designer for Soul Daisy, threw the first small theme night in Marpole to promote and showcase their talented friends.

"We had a band playing and art showing," Hudda said. "We told all our friends and drove around blowing bubbles and handing out flyers."

It was a lot of hard work and they made no money, but they both loved the positive energy of the night, and encouraging artists and patrons to connect with one another, so they kept at it.

Neufeld has lived in Marpole for 12 years and was discouraged with the nightlife available to its residents.

"There's a huge young population that lives in Marpole, but no one stays in the neighbourhood to hang out," he said.

Each event or 'night,' which happen at different venues, usually in Marpole, has a theme, from Paris Match on the French tip, Wild Card with a Vegas flavour, to Indian Summer, where they mixed native and East Indian art and music.

As well as recruiting artists, promoting the nights, booking the venues, selling the tickets, Neufeld acts as the "bar pretender," specializing in martinis, and Hudda works the door and acts as the official bubble blower.

They promote their events primarily through an email database that anyone can join for free at their website, www.gallerylounge.com.

Any Langara students who are interested in showing their art, or attending the next event in mid-April, should contact Neufeld or Hudda through the website.

Beauty, eh? James Neufeld and Shainin Hudda are livening up the Marpole neighbourhood with the Beautiful House Gallery Lounge.
