Beautiful House Gallery Lounge presented The 3rd Annual Independent Live Music & Art Christmas Show on Friday, November 22, 2002 at the Marpole Curling Club. The evening opened with the ethereal pop of Maplewood Lane who performed an emo version of Silent Night at the end of their set. Next up was a presentation by Rinat De Picciotto's off her recent year "A-Way" in Israel and Europe following 9/11 followed by the folk noir of Nettwerk Recording Artist, Jack Harlan accompanied by John Wood. Thanks for all your help with sound, John!  Tim Hughes closed the evening with his alternative pop spirituals. Disco and Mischa took turns on the turntables with their deep jazzy house in the Halo Room. Late night open mic included Annamae & The Mayknots and others.

We had our day after party at The Main Restaurant on Saturday, November 23, 2002 where Conrad performed two sets off their debut self-titled CD.  We had origianlly scheduled Late Tuesday who couldn't make it due to a scheduling conflict and then Tim Hughes lost his voice - get well soon, Tim!

As usual, we saw a number of new and familiar faces and got to know a few of you with conversations that seemed all too brief. We wish there was more time in one night and hope to meet with many of you in the weeks ahead.  Please email us your feedback and maybe we can hook up with you sometime soon!

Jack Harlan
Genre: Folk Noir
Location: Vancouver, BC
Label: Nettwerk Records
Website: jackharlan.com

life. death. love. hate. like the yin and yang that inform Taoist philosophy, the dichotomy of all things is explored in minute detail on "carnival of mystery", the debut album from observationist Jack Harlan. "Jack Harlan is a troubadour of the new folk noir... his music is lyrical and morose, moving yet morbid." - The Vancouver Province. [Full Bio Here]

Maplewood Lane
Genre: Ethereal Folk Pop
Location: Vancouver, BC
Label: Wooden Fence Music
Website: maplewoodlane.com

Fronted by female vocalist, Rebecca Rowan, Maplewood Lane is as good as they come!  This five-piece band has influences from Neil Young to The Verve and Red House Painters. Producer Jon Anderson of Jonathan Inc describes them as "...a cross between The Cranberries and My Bloody Valentine". We recommend this band for fans of The Innocence Mission. [Full Bio Here]

Tim Hughes
