Irish Spring - March 2, 2002

Irish Spring featured an evening of live music, life drawing, dj's, display art, spoken word, cocktails and cheap drinks including: Jonathan Inc - melancholic pop, The Parlour Steps - space-pop jazz, Lisa O'Neill (featuring Danny McCulloch), DJs Disco and Mischa from Halo Gallery, Nathan Bartley - didgery doo, Life/Figure Drawing - drop-in session,   Glass sculpture by Heather Irving, Photography by Roger Mahler, Paintings by Steve Hornung, Spoken word with Malcolm Johson, Open mic performance by Joanne Savoir. As with most of our events, the latter part of the evening was impromptu - members of Jonathan Inc together with the self-proclaimed P-Steps jammed together as new friendships formed throughout the evening - long live curling lanes 5 and 6 - thanks Jon, Calib et al!

Vancouver's Beautiful House Gallery Lounge held our first event of 2002 - Irish Spring on Saturday, March 2nd. Our 15th special event featured an evening of styling independent live music and performance art in the kitschy upstairs bar and lounge of the Marpole Curling Club. Two rooms and one beautiful vibe.

In the main room, we featured the hypnotic melodies, shifting dynamics and rich soundscapes of Jonathan Inc. and the experimental space-pop jazz of The Parlour Steps the rich folk of Lisa O'Neill with Danny McCulloch on guitar. Mosaic sculptures by Heather Irving, more captivating spoken word by Victoria-based creative and freelance writer, Malcolm Johnson, photography by Roger Mahler, paintings by Steve Hornung, and Figure Drawing with model Jean-Marc. In the Halo Room, dj's Disco and Mischa from Vancouver's Halo Gallery spun deep, jazzy and funky house to an appreciative latenight crowd.

See Jonathan Inc. - March 2, 2002
See The Parlour Steps - March 2, 2002

A new hand-picked lineup of exceptional independent musical performers for your listening pleasure and in the main room include:

jonathan inc.

Hypnotic melodies, shifting dynamics and rich soundscapes.

"...jonathan inc's waiting for morning reveals itself as a thing of understated power and mournful beauty... it shines with bursts of brilliant, wintry light that dazzle and exhilarate. The songs work their way under your skin, and pretty soon you'll swear they've always been there." - the ectophiles guide to good music

"songs beginning with simple ideas and ending up as gorgeously arranged emotional statements." - EXCLAIM

Jonathan Inc. features Jonathan Anderson (voice, guitar, songs, drones, samples), Sweets Bews (electric + upright bass), Michelle Grunert (moog, wurlitzer, vocals) and glen d'kruze (drums + sometimes omnichord). Perhaps best described as playing melancholic pop, they continue to mesmerize audiences with their live shows.

the parlour steps

Mixing melodic space-pop with haunting vocal harmonies, Parlour Steps draw from sources some would call hopelessly broad and whimsical in scope: pre-WWII cabaret, expansive post-punk, taut and structured pop gems, experimental jazz, even electronica. The band's debut full-length album, Myth of Summer, displayed their interest in these many things audio, mixing them up to form a beautiful and cohesive vision. The band's early career saw them giving compositional support to a wide range of theatre events and cross-genre experiments.

Parlour Steps finds Caleb Stull singing and playing guitar, Kim Stewart singing and playing bass, Josephine Lee bowing the violin, Rees Haynes leading guitar, and Rob Linton on the drum kit. With these skillful purveyors of engaging and beautiful music on board, Parlour Steps will follow their hearts to where the art is.

lisa o'neill

Lisa O'Neill is scheduled to perform material from her debut CD Internal - a compelling blend of rich folk traditions from both Irish and North American roots resulting in a style that is uniquely her own. Originally from Northern Ireland, Lisa's music has been described as melodic, lyrical, and deeply moving. Her powerful lyrics radiate from deep within her soul and her inspired songwriting is filled with passion and grace. Lisa is joined on guitar this Saturday evening with the talented Danny McCulloch.

Back by popular demand, Victoria-based creative and freelance writer, Malcolm Johnson returns to the stage for more of his compelling spoken word "capturing the weirdness and mystery and hope that are the lives of people our age". Of course, Beautiful House is for all ages, 19 and up! Display artist(s) and special guests to be announced.

Where in this city can you see such diversity in live music while you mingle with some of the city's most promising emerging talent and participate in or view an evening life/figure drawing session in progress, enjoy spoken word, art exhibits, deep house in another room, cheap beer, cocktails and share an evening with other beautiful people like yourself? It happens for one night every few months only at Beautiful House!
