Curl (II of III)
Saturday, July 7, 2001
Marpole Curling Club

Thanks for helping us build our community of artists and art lovers. Thanks also to Fashion Magazine for their November 2001 story on Curl.

About CURL:

Vancouver's Beautiful House Gallery Lounge presented Curl II, the second of three installments of "CURL", and their 12th styling event, saturday night, july 7th, 2001 in the kitschy upstairs lounge of Marpole's Curling Club at South West Marine Drive and Heather.

Curl II featured the live musical stylings of everything from "pop" to "urban folk" to "edgy atmospheric rock" to "electronica redefined" with a Life Drawing drop-in session, two fabulous DJs, and cocktails all in the same evening!

Call For "Live" Painters/Sketch Artists:

If you are a painter or sketch artist, bring your paints, canvas or sketch pads to an upcoming event. We'll have one free model posing during the evening in short and long poses.

Our Review:

Curl II was packed! A great night with so much talent in the house - Stephanie Jean opened the evening with her growing collection of ballads and infectuous grooves followed by a mezmerizing set by Craig Norton on electric guitar as David Lane took to the second stage for life drawing around 11pm. Malcolm Johnson's performance monologue added to the already heightened energy followed by NeNah Reece's edgy atmospheric pop. Then a short open mike session drew the largest applause when visiting Atlantan, Leslie Seamands, performed opera. Soressa Gardner then took to the stage with a new twist to her set and the evening ended with a late crowd showing up for Sonicjoy's ethereal electronica. All were "caught in the curl" that night and thanks to all we had an amazing event!

Live Musical Stylings by...

Sonicjoy - New to Beautiful House, Sonicjoy blends electronica trance vibes with world beats and middle eastern acoustic instrumentation. Sonicjoy is built around the ethereal lyrics and vocals of Joyelle Brandt. Featuring a global collection of instruments, Sonicjoy incorporates everything from tabla to snake charmer to djembe.

Soressa Gardner - Soressa's song writing appeals to lyric-hungry listeners with an ear for quirky story-telling. Her distinct style of urban folk explores inner workings and secret selves. We're glad she's back, with new material to boot, after her first Beautiful House performance at our first Curl event in April.

NeNah Reece - She describes her music as "edgy and atmospheric pop". Singer/songwriter, NeNah Reece, has been making a fresh start with her guitar over the past year - performing a number of solo, 2-piece and 3-piece gigs in Vancouver including recent gigs at Cafe Montmartre, Cafe De Soleil and Divas @ Babalu. We're glad she's back after her first Beautiful House performance at our Angel event.

Stephanie Jean - New to Beautiful House, this 22 year old pop recording artist has spent the past two years recording tracks off her 'advance ep' and forthcoming CD. Stephanie wants to sings songs that are "positive and leave people with feelings of hope". With airplay already on Z95.3, Stephanie loves how music can "cross all barriers and touch people in so many ways - to be able to do that myself is something very exciting."

Craig Norton - He describes his music as "romantic love - except I’m on the loosing end". A self taught guitar player and singer/songwriter, Craig will be recording his debut CD this summer after performing original material regularly at various open mike nights around Vancouver for the past year or so. We're glad he's back after his first Beautiful performances at our Angel and The Four Loves events.

Spoken Word by...

Malcolm Johnson - A BC-based creative and freelance writer, Malcolm’s first collection of works, a collaboration with Victoria writer Matthew Hooton, was published in January. We're glad he's back after his first Beautiful House performance at The Four Loves event.
