Masquerade
Lounge
October 1999
Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre (Upstairs Lounge)
Our
2nd event and followup to Open
The Door, was held on Halloween 1999 in the
Upstairs Lounge of the Marpole-Oakridge Community
Centre. The evening featured an extensive photographic
exhibit by Dianne
Whelan, live music with Michelle
Shepherd, Rinat
De Picciotto and Ed
Klassen, and monologue performances by Kathleen
Boddington, Mistress of Ceremonies for the
evening.
Brought
to light by dozens of tea lights, Dianne
Whelan's black and white photographic works
made a quiet impact on the costumed guests. Her nude
images stirred the conversation that night to the
question, "What is a costume?. Do the clothes
we wear mask our true selves? Are we truly ourselves
when we are naked?" Guests pondered the answers
to these and related questions raised by Kathleen
Boddington's monologues.
For this special Halloween event, we grouped our signature
cocktails into two categories: the nudes, which were
martinis bare bones styled like the Beautiful Stranger
(vodka, dry vermouth, lemon twist and green olive);
and the costumed martinis, which covered the alcohol
with an added layer of taste such as the African Violet
(vodka, blue curaceao, triple sec, cranberry juice
garnished with a lemon twist). Across the room from
the Beautiful Bar, Brenda
Wheatley offered Selena Point herbal teas
(including the ever popular Blueberry tea) to guests.
Marpole photographer, Pascal
Soudeyns attended the event and took some
interesting shots of the venue and the guests.

While the heavy rainfall and multitude of other Halloween
parties going on that night may have prevented more
people from attending, the small and intimate group
of people that did gather together enjoyed a good
evening of music, monologue, display and cocktails.
