November 1999
Marpole Warehouse #1
Our
3rd event was held in a great little warehouse at
West 72nd and Selkirk Street in the heart of Marpole,
not far from the popular Louisiana Restaurant, Appy
Hour, or Ygeia Restaurant, home of our first event,
Open The
Door, both on Hudson and West 73rd.
Night
At The Copa featured two display artists, local Vancouver
photographer, Heather
Raworth, and local Marpole painter, Daren
Demeule; local singer/songwriter,
Laurie MacDonald debuted at Beautiful House
with spoken word by our emcee, Kathleen
Boddington and plenty of cocktails and mingling
after the show.

This non-descript building (shown above during our
event) is home to McComb's Fine Finishings by day
and for two events (November 1999 and January 2000),
it was our very own sound-proof grungy space - the
perfect spot to lay the groundwork for the future
of Beautiful House events... and... latenight dj's???
We had hoped to continue there but the business that
occupied the space in the day needed the space to
expand their operations and soon we found ourselves
back on the goose chase dealing with a variety of
landlords for funky warehouses or suitable locations
in the area. Perhaps one day, we'll return and claim
this warehouse a permanent residence, but for now,
we've moved on to more Marpole warehouses, Marpole
Place, Starry
Dynamo, a literary cafe on Main Street, and
the Marpole
Curling Club.
Back in the days of our "Night At The Copa",
we were often touted as "underground" to
some of our more mainstream guests although, overall,
any Beautiful House event is far from the often brutal
ugliness of many of the city's mainstream or undergound
establishments. We won't mention any names, but have
you looked at the state of the arts and entertainment
scene in the city recently? No wonder there's a "new
forms" movement going on. Check out the related
review on Beautiful House in Fashion Magazine's
November 2001 issue!
Beautiful House is ultimately about people - the artists
and musicians we select and the crowd we draw knows
it, appreciates it, and spreads the word to perhaps
someone like yourself who stumbles upon our website
and wants to check us out first.
So whether we're beautifying a grungy warehouse like
this with fabric, slide projectors, mirror balls,
candles and incense, or adding ambiance and life to
more sterile environments like a community centre
where we held our previous event, Masquerade
Lounge, it's ultimately about working with
a space to create a warm, non-threatening environment
for like-minded music and art lovers to enjoy.
