"Denison Witmer is a promising
young singer/songwriter with a sad, unflinching eye
for confessional detail and a patient, creep up on
you brand of understatement... (Witmer's songs are)
austere, acoustic laments sung in a deceptively potent
wisp of delivery."
- Philadelphia Weekly / Philadelphia, PA
"Witmer's simple lyrics and
pretty guitar work might just grow on you... Witmer
has the ability to make depressing songs sound uplifting."
- The Register-Guard / Eugene, OR
"(Witmer offer's) spare
vocals and subtle guitar work... warm tones and honest
delivery... Witmer's high, sad voice is reminiscent
of the late Nick Drake. "
- The Paper / Grand Rapids, MI
Denison Witmer - The Simple Power
of Honesty
From the very beginning, from the very first grainy
notes of sound through a computer speaker, it was
painfully obvious that Pennsylvania's Denison Witmer
was something special. The simple guitar picking and
reedy vocals captured the essence of this young songwriter
so clearly that not even the somewhat dubious sound
quality provided by Internet streaming audio sources
could drown it out. While his peers (he is a mere
twenty two years old) are mining the potent ground
of emotive indie rock and strong pop hooks, Witmer
has chosen a different path for himself. That path
is of simplicity recognizing the almost overwhelming
power of simple honesty. - True Tunes
"There's something to be said
for music that's completely lacking in pretense. I've
always admired those who are completely willing to
forgo any sense of ego and wear their hearts on their
sleeve for everyone else to see. Of course, if done
poorly, it's more embarrassing than anything else.
However, done right, it somehow resonates with you
in a way that's hard to explain. File "Safe Away"
securely in the latter category. But I didn't come
to that conclusion easily." - Opus Zine
"Denison Witmer on the 80s
Ep, a precursor to his upcoming Of Joy and Sorrow,
is quite captivating. Witmer is a promising talent.
Check out Paper Doll, a demo from 1994 (when Witmer
was only 17), its spare beauty emphasizes his amazing
voice. This is a late night, lights low, album. Be
sure to grab his full length debut - Safe Away. Witmer
on the final track of the 80s ep, and on much of Safe
Away, is accompanied by Don Peris, of the Innocence
Mission, on classic guitar." - Amazon.com review
His music is a must for fans of
pre-Dreamworks Elliott Smith, acoustic Red House Painters,
Ida, Richard Buckner, Wilco, Nick Drake...
