Miriam
Davidson is a highly versatile singer/songwriter on
the Vancouver
music scene. Her music is best described as jazz-tinged
pop. With influences ranging from P.J. Harvey
to Ella Fitzgerald, its easy to see why. Her
experience in jazz, pop and classical genres has given
her original music a very unique sound. Miriam's songs
range in dynamics from the pop/rock "Acid Tongue"
to the jazzy Grace.
Miriam
first became interested in music 10 years ago when
she joined a musical theatre group simply for "something
to do". She soon decided to take voice lessons
and her voice teacher recommended that she study music
at a university. This new hobby lead to
a serious music career when in 1992, she was accepted
into the Music Program at the University of British
Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in 1996.
While studying classical or "serious" music
at UBC, she became interested in both 20th Century
or "new music" as well as jazz. For two
years, she studied jazz with renowned vocalist Jennifer
Scott as well as composition at UBC. When she graduated
from UBC, she had a solid background in both classical
and jazz music, giving her great versatility as a
vocalist and as a songwriter.
Miriam
has worked and recorded with some of the West Coast's
finest musicians such as drummer Bruce Nielsen, guitarist
Jon Roper, legendary pianist Linton Garner, bassist
Laurence Mollerup and band leader/composer Rob Best
to name only a few. In 1998 she recorded and produced
her debut CD Subtexts featuring Jon Roper and Marc
Rogers. All but three of the songs on the album were
written by Miriam. She also sang background vocals
for Rob Best's World Jive Big Band's CD Motsola in
1999. Miriam sang alto on the Laudate Singers CD releases
Christmas Journey and Songs Of Heaven And Earth and
Elektra Womens Choir upcoming new Christmas
CD.
Since
1996, she has been actively performing jazz standards
in leading Vancouver venues such as St. Andrew Wesley's
Jazz Vespers Series, Rossini's, Ouizi Bistro and the
Silvertone Tavern. This year, she expanded her vast
jazz repertoire to include pop songs as well. She
is also a member of the excellent Laudate Singers.
During the Christmas season, she sings in and manages
an a cappella vocal ensemble Caminando as well as
a voice and piano/keyboard duo with her regular pianist
Ian Cox.
Now
she is writing songs for her next album, gigging around
town and teaching voice and theory. Pianist/keyboard
player Ian Cox recently moved to Vancouver from Kelowna,
BC. He has played in the Okanagan Jazz Festival for
several years as well as playing at many venues throughout
the Okanagan and the Kootenays. He has also done a
lot of radio work in the Interior. He is also the
music director of a multi-media showcase revue called
"Music Of The Century". Drummer Loren Davidson
has been playing in rock bands on Vancouver Island
and in Vancouver for seven years. He is also very
well versed in electronic music which will add very
interesting and exciting dynamics to Miriams
new album. He also happens to be Miriams brother
so musical talent seems to run in this family.
