Singer, songwriter and guitarist Nicole Steen is the leader of the veteran Vancouver "torch noir" band COAL who celebrated their 10th anniversary with a fabulous show at the Silvertone Tavern, the release of a video compilation "Coalescent:Six Videos by Coal" and a 3rd CD release "Beautiful Afterburn" receiving international critical praise.

Nicole has recently been venturing out on her own as a solo artist with opening spots for the Cash Brothers, Auburn, and Featherweight at the world famous Railway Club and is currently in the studio with producer Marc L'Esperance working on her debut solo CD. She continues to guest as vocalist on various side projects such as Mean Men Inc., Corsage, and new releases for Phil Smith, Jack Harlan (Nettwerk) and Auburn and recently did a vocal spot on the new documentary "Celluloid Dreams" featuring David Lynch and Jean Pierre Jeunet. Nicole is also a painter and exhibits as one of the Lowbrow pop artist's The Poptarts and co-curates The Tart Gallery.

ABOUT COAL - Vancouver's only "ethereal psychedelic western noir lounge act", Coal combines the talents of Nicole Steen (vocals, guitar), Marcus Rogers (bass), Jon Wood (guitar), and Ian Tiles (drums) to create truly unique music. Coal's music has been described as "smoky, sultry and eerie all at once" (Impact), "with an incredible gothic texture that brings it to the realm of ambient blues..." (Exclaim), and "Cool and atmospheric as hell." (Eye Weekly).
