Singer,
songwriter and guitarist Nicole Steen is the leader
of the veteran Vancouver "torch noir" band
COAL who celebrated their 10th anniversary with a
fabulous show at the Silvertone Tavern, the release
of a video compilation "Coalescent:Six Videos
by Coal" and a 3rd CD release "Beautiful
Afterburn" receiving international critical praise.
Nicole has recently been venturing out on her own
as a solo artist with opening spots for the Cash Brothers,
Auburn, and Featherweight at the world famous Railway
Club and is currently in the studio with producer
Marc L'Esperance working on her debut solo CD. She
continues to guest as vocalist on various side projects
such as Mean Men Inc., Corsage, and new releases for
Phil Smith, Jack
Harlan (Nettwerk) and Auburn and recently did
a vocal spot on the new documentary "Celluloid
Dreams" featuring David Lynch and Jean Pierre
Jeunet. Nicole is also a painter and exhibits as one
of the Lowbrow pop artist's The Poptarts and co-curates
The
Tart Gallery.

act", Coal combines the talents of Nicole Steen
(vocals, guitar), Marcus Rogers (bass), Jon Wood (guitar),
and Ian Tiles (drums) to create truly unique music.
Coal's music has been described as "smoky, sultry

incredible gothic texture that brings it to the realm
of ambient blues..." (Exclaim), and "Cool
