Elements of folk and country collide with brit-pop sensibilities to create a dreamy album that gives the listener an opportunity to close their eyes and get lost in the music and lyrics. “Closer to Home” is a chronicling of sorts; of the search for peace, of a well travelled soul longing for that first glimpse of home ... a pilgrim and a troubadour ... with love songs and prayers all tangled up in one. being the son of a travelling missionary, joel spent his formative years in kenya, uganda and india, giving him a unique perspective as a songwriter.
Willoughby has assembled an all-star cast to support him on the album. Jonathan Anderson lends his hand at electric guitar, lap steel, bass, and a plethora of other instruments. Rebecca Rowan (of Maplewood Lane) sings hauntingly beautiful back-up vocals and plays harmonica as well. Nate Beede (formerly of the the pale) plays electric guitar on several tracks, and also sings back-up. Joel Willoughby takes care of the rest: lead vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums and percussion.
All in all, “Closer to Home” is a great debut and a captivating album. If you like the music of Simon and Garfunkle, Travis, Denison Witmer, or Neil Young - give this album a listen.
