"audio-lava" is an exciting
new music project based out of Vancouver, that has
created a lush sound out of programmed drum loops,
keyboard samples, spaghetti western guitar and the
powerful yet delicately emotive vocals of Lisa b.
The music originates from their
home studio "Lavaland" where they produced
their first sonic offering "Voodoo Sigh"(1999).
Although their music has elements of trip-hop and
electronica, the lyrics and music remains song based
with verse/chorus structure and lyrics that
tell a story.
The groups cofounders Brent Cross
and Lisa Butel have performed in the Vancouver music
scene at venues like the Railway Club, Sugar Refinery,
Cafe Deux Soleil, Silvertone Tavern, Gastown Music
Hall, Town Pump and for the opening ceremonies of
Seattle's Bumbershoot Music Festival.
Brent started his music career playing
classical piano. He currently plays guitar in Audio-Lava,
however it's the production and writing which keeps
him up working late at night. Ambient and electronic
music that houses great songwriting is what makes
him say yes. Brent is currently recording new music
at his home-based computer studio, Lavaland in east
Vancouver. Brent has received a major FACTOR C.D.
loan for a previous recording with the "Mudlarks".
His work has received nation wide distribution with
Festival Records in Vancouver. He also plays guitar.
Lisa B. - "I've always sung.
In highschool, my mother would drive me to the big
city of Regina for weekly vocal lessons that I took
for years. My favorite vocalists/bands are Lamb, Bjork,
Portishead, PJ Harvery, Ella Fitzgerald and Billy
Holiday. I love good food - a good bread, fine chocolate,
fine cuisine and a dark beer or fine dry red wine
make my day". Lisa's vocal work has received
many accolades such as in the Victoria's Monday Magazine:
"sweet, strong vocals,innovative stylings in
the tradition of Jane Siberry (but with more punch)
and simple yet beautifully arranged lyrics make this
C.D. rich in tasty...treats. 5 stars". Lisa currently
also operates and performs on a Sound Module during
live shows.
Brent and Lisa's songs have received
national airplay on C.B.C. radio and on Nightlines
with David Wisdom.
For live shows they will perform
either as a duo with loops, samples and programmed
drums or with a live jazz band in addition to these
programmed elements. For live shows the duo are joined
by the talented musicians of: Russell Sholberg (double
bass and upright electric bass/ formerly of "Rhymes
with Orange" and "Bif Naked"); Rob
Maynard (drums and electric drums/ formerly of "Active
Joy" and current solo project "Rob-M");
Pierre Lumoncel (keyboards/ formerly of "Nyetz"
and currently with "Hard Rock Miners" and
"Beauticians").
