Happy face48-Hour Musical Wins Two Awards - "Frequency Zero" to screen again August 29
**********************

"Frequency Zero", the first musical from Steam Powered Films, won the Best Ensemble Performance and People's Choice awards at the 2002 ReelFast 48 Hour Film Festival's Gala Screening August 22 at the Commodore Ballroom. Other winners at the gala included Jason Margolis's "Tierheim" for Best Picture, and Al Silverman, who again won Best Director for "Tennis With Dale Bradley" following his 2001 win for "My Face".

The ten-person "Frequency Zero" team - made up of Songwriter/Performers Samuel Dulmage & Peter New, Composer Phil Mahoney, Music Producer Keith Gillard, Performer Anna Cummer, Choreographer/Performer Laura Jaszcz, Cinematographer Jason Weir, Assistant Director T.G. Sheperd, Assistant Editor Aubrey Tennant, and Director/Editor Mike Jackson - wrote, shot and edited the film in 48 hours including all lyrics and music.

The story took shape around an item that the team received in their inspiration package: a photograph of a sign reading "Frequency Zero Is The Goal". The phrase became a recurring lyrical theme in the film - a tale of a world where singing has been outlawed, and a policeman who falls in love with a golden-voiced waitress.

The "Frequency Zero" team had such a wonderful time during the competition that they are already talking about a feature-length musical. Steam Powered Films was founded in Fall 1999 as a independent production house; past films include Dude, A Fishfull of Dollars, and Dial A For Alphaman. "Frequency Zero" will be screening this Thursday, August 29, at The Celluloid Social Club, held at the Anza Club, #3 West 8th, at 8pm.

Also screening will be "Tierheim" (Best Film, 2002 ReelFast 48Hr. Film Festival) Jason Reitman's "In God We Trust" (Best Film, 2002 Vancouver International Comedy Film Festival), and more.

Middle arrowFall Solo Exhibitions commencing at the Jennifer Kostuik Gallery
They will be opening the new exhibition year with:

"The Quilt" New paintings by Edith Stipl Opening: Saturday afternoon, August 24th 1-5pm Exhibition continues until September 8th, 2002

Based out of Prague and Toronto this will be Edith Stipl's introductory exhibition in Vancouver of her oil on linen and oil on panel paintings.

Included below is an excerpt from Edith Stipl's Artist Statement "The Quilt":

"So here we have hands and woods. As with anything, one can look for possible connections between two seemingly unrelated things. In this case, even though the connection is not obvious, hands and woods are strong symbols as well as archetypes, that occur together quite often throughout the arts. Art Nouveau and Symbolist painting, fairy tales, early horror films and detective stories."

"...Emphasized by their scale, the hands are symbols of language and its psychological strategies. Socially, these dancing/fighting hands belong to any environment where a power struggle takes place. Lies in Lace, gilt - quilt - guilt. I enjoyed the physical process of painting these three pieces".

Happy faceThe Grid Dilemma @ Onepointsix gallery
Onepointsix gallery is pleased to mount the first Vancouver exhibition by Elizabeth Graham, entitled The Grid Dilemma.

****************************************

August 27 - September 28, 2002 Opening reception: Thursday, August 29 @ 7pm

Artist in attendance

Comprised of both paintings on panel and paintings on layered Plexiglas, Graham’s sophisticated exhibition investigate the notion that a city is an ever-changing system: constantly moving, shifting and transforming. Her works explore how urban development is represented in a cartographic language and while depicting a given landscape in a non-linear fashion. Involving large blocks of subdued colour and the blue-print style, architectural language of cartography, the works attempt to tell a story of what lay before and what will come. They attempt to mimic how a city develops. Layers, translucency, and the presentation of industrial materials become important. Plywood, Plexiglas, stainless steel bolts and screws - they bridge the industrial with the conceptual.

Hope to see you at the exhibition!

D J V e r o n i c a wants to thank some of the people she met in Australia who really helped her out and made things happen for her there

D J V e r o n i c a ’ s Melbourne:

www.12am.com.au brought her out to Melbourne for her second week for the launch of their fashion section (FBI). To see how that night went, visit their website...there's a lot to be found on that site so it's worth a visit!

D J V e r o n i c a says of all of the crew, "I'll just say the 12am posse! And also www.mooks.com too! DJ Andre with whom I shared the decks with (and quite a few bottles of wine) at the beautiful club www.room680.com and had a fantastic time, as well as DJ Luke Bowditch, a DJ of exceptional skills, and of course, Mo. There are loads of pictures on my website of my time in Melbourne now." "And the clubvibes crew there too...that was quite a night, and you all called it a 'tame' night, didn't you? " D J V e r o n i c a ’ s Sydney experience was:

"DJ Jules & Shane (again) and thanks for the fantastic record selections! DOES August seems too far away? Check out some of their exciting events in May. Join some of Vancouver's hottest queer Asian filmmakers May 4 for a special screening featuring Gordon Wong, Desiree (Dez) Lim, Wayne Yung and more. This event is in conjunction with Asian Heritage Month. On May 7, Out On Screen teams up with DOXA and the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival to co-present "Trembling Before G-d", an unprecedented documentary that shatters assumptions about faith, sexuality and religious fundamentalism. OOS is thrilled to be a part of these community events.

Please read on for information on these screenings and more.

Queer Asian films and videos explore cross-cultural identities:

Looking Back, Moving Forward: Past Work From Vancouver's Queer Film and Video Festival Saturday May 4, 4 p.m. at Pacific Cinematheque, 1131 Howe Street, Vancouver, B.C. Tickets $8.50 general admission $5.50 students / seniors / underemployed

Working with Vancouver's Asian Heritage Month, Out On Screen presents audiences with a thought-provoking retrospective of work from Western Canada's queer Asian arts community. Why not come out, kick back and enjoy the afternoon with some of Vancouver's hottest queer filmmakers?

Looking Back, Moving Forward will bring you insights from artists traversing the spectrum between the Asian and queer communities in British Columbia. Make sure you stick around after the screenings for the question and answer session with the artists. It'll be a great way to spend an afternoon and sure to give you plenty to think about. Bring your friends and get them involved in the discussion!

Discover Lieutenant LaForge's inner queen in Gordon Wong's 1997 "Star Trek: Disco Generation". Wayne Yung's 1998 "Angel" is a visually stunning meditation of one man's fall from grace. The duckling (far from ugly) becomes glorious in "In the Skin of Becoming Swan" from Alvin Tolentino (2000). Patrice Leung's 1998 "Womyn Warriors" is a lovingly rendered portrait of a softball team on the road to the Gay Games.

Gay Jewish stories spark community dialogue "Trembling Before G-d" powerful and groundbreaking Tuesday, May 7, 7:30 p.m. at The Ridge Theatre, 3131 Arbutus Street Tickets: $10 at Little Sister’s and the Jewish Community Centre or at (604) 723-1461.

"This mother and son who had never been able to speak about his gayness sat crying through the film, and stood hugging after, saying the movie opened up a line of communication they had not had, and thanked us." - Director Sandi Simcha DuBowski

Out On Screen joins hands with DOXA Documentary Film & Video Festival and The Vancouver Jewish Film Festival for the co-presentation of the intensely powerful and groundbreaking documentary, "Trembling Before G-d". Director Sandi Simcha DuBowski will be in attendance.

"Trembling Before G-d" is an unprecedented feature documentary that shatters assumptions about faith, sexuality, and religious fundamentalism. Built around intimately-told personal stories of Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian, the film portrays a group of people who face a profound dilemma - how to reconcile their passionate love of Judaism and the Divine with the Biblical prohibitions that forbid homosexuality. How often have you engaged in the religion vs. homosexuality debate? Check "Trembling Before G-d" out for a different take on a very old issue.

"Trembling Before G-d" has screened around the world, most notably featured as the Sundance Film Festival's Official Selection (2001), and has won numerous awards including Best Documentary at the Berlin Film Festival (2001) and the Mayor's Prize for the Jewish Experience at the Jerusalem Film Festival (2001).
