Bruce Davis
Artist
Statement:
"When
Rob was a child his mother gave him a pencil and paper
to occupy him while at church (his father was a protestant
minister). He sat quietly in the pew drawing stick
men, tanks, planes, and cars and eventually graduated
to drawing rude and disgusting pictures. Initially,
Rob wanted to be a minister like his dad because he
had no idea of what else to do with his life. So,
Robert went to theology school but after one semester
he felt like a complete hypocrite and started to think
for himself. Rob then stopped going to church, decided
to become an atheist and a rock star. His only problem
was that he had no rhythm at all and that being an
atheist is just like being a theist. Rob then decided
to become an agnostic and a poet. He was young, horny,
sincere, depressed, and romantic so, poetry seemed
like the perfect path. A university degree in English
soon taught him that poetry is boring and that nobody
even reads poetry anymore. So he did what most people
do when they don't know what to do with rest of their
lives, or are scared of what they really want to be,
he joined the corporate world. He even became a big
bad manager but was incredibly unhappy with corporatism.
It became clear to Rob that he was happiest when he
was just being himself like when he was drawing naked
women in church as a kid. So, Rob made the leap and
did what he should have done all along, he let go
of his fear and became a full time painter. Rob lives
in Vancouver Canada and has been seriously painting
since 1997. He is poor (relatively speaking), but
has had some success selling and exhibiting paintings.
He doesn't draw stick men anymore, but sex is still
a constant image in his work. Robert also explores
religious, social and political themes in his art.
Most importantly of all, Rob is happier then he ever
has been. Thanks to his mom."
